About this tool

ROI Calculator

ROI shows the gain or loss from an investment relative to its cost. Enter the amount invested and the final amount received to see net profit, ROI percentage, and the total return multiple.

ROI is useful for quick comparisons, but it does not account for how long the money was invested unless you separately annualize the result.

Common questions

ROI Calculator FAQ

What is the ROI formula?

ROI equals net profit divided by investment cost, multiplied by 100. Net profit is final value minus investment cost.

Can ROI be negative?

Yes. When the final value is lower than the investment cost, the result is negative and represents a loss relative to the original cost.

Does ROI account for time?

No. A 20% return over one year and a 20% return over five years have the same simple ROI but very different annual performance.
